My servant draws not near to Me as
there is something I love more than the obligatory duties I have enjoined upon
him, But he shall certainly draw near to Me through voluntary reverence, over
and above the obligatory worship (an-Nawāfil) until I love him. When I
love him, I am his hearing with which he hears, his seeing with which he sees,
his hand with which he strikes and grasps, and his foot with which he walks. Were
he to call Me, I would answer him, and were he to solicit Me, I would grant him.

During the ascension to the
Heavens (al-miʿrāj ), Prophet Muḥammad ◢ asked Allāh
◣ “Oh Lord what is the best
act of worship?” Allāh ◣ replied “the
Silence and the Ṣawm.” [The Prophet] asked: Oh Lord what does the Ṣawm generate?” He ◣ replied the
fasting (aṣ-ṣawm) gives birth to the divinely gifted wisdom (al-ḥikmah), and this
“wisdom” gives birth to the divinely gifted knowledge (al-maʿrifah), and
this “knowledge” gives birth to the divinely gifted certainty (al-yaqīn). When My obedient worshipper reaches the
station of the “certainty (al-yaqīn)” he shall not be
distressed about hardship or ease (i.e. he will be in peace).
