Imām al-Riḍā ▧:

May Allāh ◣ shower mercy upon an obedient who has revived our cause.  The Imām was asked “how could one revive your cause”?  He replied: by learning about our knowledge, and making it known to [other] people.  People would indeed follow us if they knew about the virtue of our words.

Verily, the love of us, Ahl al- Bayt, sheds sins off an individual, just as a strong wind sheds leaves off the tree.

19-01 Creation of the Light of Wilāyah before Creation of This World

...اِنّی لِهَويَوه اَنا لِبرين وٰارَخ لا الشِمای وَ لا اَل اَرعٰا وَ لا الپِردِس وَ لا الکيَهِن وَ لا الشِّمِش وَلا السَّعر... پارَقليطا، ايليٰا، طيطِه، شَپَر، شُپَير.  هَليلُوه لِت اَلَهَ شُوق مِنّي.  [محمد] اِنِوّی دِاَلَهَ (أصلُ هَذا ٱلحَديث باللُغَةِ ٱلسِريانِیَّه).

هنگامی كه خداوند مرا آفرید و روحش را در من دمید، بلند شده و نشستم. همین طور كه به عرش خدا می‌نگریستم، ناگهان پنج نور بسیار درخشان را دیدم. غرق در پرتو انوار آنها شدم و از خداوند پرسیدم این پنج نور كیستند؟ خداوند فرمود: "این پنج نور، نورهای اشرف مخلوقات، باب‌ها و واسطه‌های رحمت من هستند، اگر آنها نبودند من تو را نمی آفریدم و نه آسمان و نه زمین و نه بهشت و نه جهنم و نه آفتاب و نه ماه را."  پرسیدم خدایا نام اینها چیست؟ فرمود: "به عرش بنگر." وقتی به عرش نگاه كردم، این نامها را مشاهده نمودم: "پارقلیطا (محمد)، ایلیا (علی)، طیطه (فاطمه)، شَبَر (حَسَن) و شُبَیر (حُسَین).  مرا تسبيح کنید که نيست الهی غیر از من.  [محمد ] فرستاده من است" (اصل این حدیث به زبان سریانی است).

It is interesting to know that the Glad Tidings about the emergence of Prophet Muḥammad, and his Ahl al-Bayt was given to our father, Ḥaḍrat Ādam , according to  revelations to Prophet Enoch (Idris ), seventh generation descendant of Prophet Ādam.  It is a very beautiful divine story.  The full story is quite charming but we suffice only to what concerns this topic.  The original text is in Syriac, and the following is its translation to English.  Prophet Ādam ▧ says:

 When Allāh created me and breathed into me from His Spirit, I got up and sat by.  I suddenly saw five shining lights, extremely luminous, when I looked at the Throne of Allāh .   I was fascinated with the glorious radiation of these lights, and asked Allāh what these five lights were.  Allāh kindly replied: [O Ādam!] These five lights are the lights of the most superior of all creatures, and are the gateways and means of [propagating] My Mercy and Compassion to other created beings.  I would not have created you, nor the heavens, nor the earth, nor the paradise, nor the hell, nor the sun, nor the moon, if they did not exist.[ii]  I asked what are their names?  He kindly replied: Look at the Throne!  I realised [the truth of] these names written [recorded] when I looked at the Throne[iii]:  Paraqliṭā (Muḥammad), Ilyā (ʿAlī), Ṭiṭih (Fāṭimah), Shapar (Ḥasan), and Shupayr (Ḥusayn) .  Glorify me for there is no Allāh but me.  And [Muḥammad] is sent by Me.

19-02 Existence of Prophet Muḥammad ◢ Before Adam

Replying to Johns question, Prophet Jesus said: “Adam, having sprung up upon his feet, he saw in the air a writing that shone like the sun, which said: ‘There is only one God, and Mohammed is the messenger of God’.  Whereupon, Adam opened his mouth and said ‘I thank thee, O Lord, my God, that thou hast deigned to create me. But tell me I beg thee, what meaneth the message of these words: ‘Mohammed is messenger of God?’  Have there been other men before me?  Then said God: ‘Be thou welcome, O my servant Adam.  I tell thee that thou art the first man whom I have created [in this world], and he whom thou hast seen is thy son, who shall come into the world many years hence.  And shall be my messenger, for whom I have created all things, who shall give light to the world when he shall come[iv]; whose soul was set in a celestial splendour sixty thousand years before I made anything.  Adam besought God, saying: Lord, grant me this writing upon the nails of the fingers of my hands.  Then God gave to the first man upon his thumbs that writing; upon the thumb-nail of the right hand it said: There is only one God, and upon the thump-nail of the left hand it said: Mohammed is messenger of God.  Then with fatherly affection the first man kissed those words, and rubbed [anointed] his eyes, and said: Blessed be that day when thou shalt come to the world.

19-03 Creation of Wilāyah Out of Nūr

إِنَّ اللَّهَ خَلَقَنِي وَ خَلَقَ عَلِيّاً وَ فَاطِمَةَ وَ الْحَسَنَ وَ الْحُسَيْنَ وَ الْأَئِمَّةَ مِنْ نُورٍ.

بدرستى كه خداوند متعال من و على و فاطمه و حسن و حسين و ائمه [اطهار] را از نور خلق فرمود.

Verily Allāh ◣ created me, ʿAlī, Fātimah, Ḥasan, Ḥusayn and the [purified] imāms from Nūr (Light)[v]

19-04

خُلِقْتُ أَنَا وَ عَلِيٌّ مِنْ نُورٍ وَاحِد.

من وعلی از يک نور خلق شده ايم.

ʿAlī and I are created from the same Nūr.

19-05 The Cause (Ḥujjat) Of Creation

يَا أحمَد لَوْلَاكَ لَمَا خَلَقْتُ الْأَفْلَاكَ.‏

ای محمد اگر تو نبودی، محققا اين جهان را نمى‏آفريدم

O Aḥmad (Muḥammad’s name in the heavens) I would definitely not create the celestial beings, if you were not in existence.

Al-Ḥadith al-Qudsiyyah, Book No. 3, v. 16, p. 406, and al-Mustadrak on Safinat al-Biḥār (ash-Shaykh ʿAlī an-Namāzi al-Shāhrūdi), v. 3, p. 166.  

According to the glorious Qur’ān, the primary objective of creation cannot be achieved withought the existence of the Prophet of Islam ◢.  In Sūrah Al-Baqarah (2), āyah 29 Allāh ◣ addresses the entire humankind that whatever is in the Earth is created for them (all people) He is the One Who has created everything that is on earth, collectively, for you... هُوَ الَّذِى خَلَقَ لَكُم مَّا فىِ الْأَرْضِ جَمِيعًا.  In Sūrah Adh-Dhāriyāt (51), āyah 56 He ◣ also clarifies “I did not create the jinn and the humankind except that they should obey (worship) Me…وَ مَا خَلَقْتُ الجِنَّ وَ الْانسَ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُونِ”.  Fulfilment of the truth of obedience and worship amongst the jinn and humankind is for the ultimate cognition (معرفة) of Allāh , and is impossible without the guidance and direction of  prophets of Allāh ◣.  In particular, Prophet Muḥammad ◢, the Seal of all prophets, the establisher of the perfected dīn of Allāh ◣, the deliverer of His uncompromising divine Qur’ān for the ultimate and perfect guidance of all people, is singled out in creation.  Without his existence the objective of Allāh’s creation would not have been fulfilled, as Allāh ◣ has clarified it in the above Ḥadith al-Qudsiyyah. 

 

In addition, the prophet of Islam ◢ is the perfect manifestation of an obedient worshipper to the point that in Sūrah Al-Aḥzāb (33), āyah 21 Allāh ◣ tells usVerily there is a set of excellent exemplars in the Messenger of Allāh for you [to follow]. لَّقَدْ كاَنَ لَكُمْ فىِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ.  Therefore, the entire creation would have been futile without the blessed being of Prophet Muḥammad ◢.  Other pious individuals are also significant, in different degrees, to fulfil Allāh ’s objective in His Creation.  But they all need the “excellent exemplars” of Prophet Muḥammad and his deliverance of the Glorious Qur’ān in order to follow the “Straight Path” of worship and obedience. 

 

Allāh’s objective of His Creation is to see people grow to the ultimate point of humanity.  This cannot be achieved without the perfected stage of His dīn.  Prophet Muḥammad ◢ was specifically created to be commissioned by Allāh ◣, as the Seal of all prophets, to bring about the “perfected stage” of Allāh’s dīn.  The following shows that he was quite instrumental to finally establish the perfected dīn of Allāh ◣, in order to complete the task of 124,000 divine messengers, a perfect completion, forever.  When he appointed and installed arat ʿAlī ▧ as the first Waliyy, by the Command of Allāh ◣, the heavenly voice proclaimed (āyah 3 from sūrah al-Mā idah (5)):

 

...الْيَوْمَ أَكْمَلْتُ لَكُمْ دِينَكُمْ وَأَتْمَمْتُ عَلَيْكُمْ نِعْمَتِي وَرَضِيتُ لَكُمُ الإسْلامَ دِينًا...

“…This day, I have perfected your dīn for you, completed My Favour upon you, and I am pleased with you to embrace Islām as the way of life (dīn) …"

19-06 Other causes of Creation

و لَولا عَلى لَمَا خَلَقتُكَ وَ لَولا فَاطِمَه لَمَا خَلَقتُكُمَا. 

و اگر علی نبود محققا من تو را نمیآفریدم و اگر فاطمه نبود محققا من تو و علی را نمیآفریدم.

I would definitely not create you, if ʿAlī was not in existence, and I would definitely not create you and ʿAlī if Fāṭimah was not in existence.

 

It is impossible to be an obedient worshipper without following a divine dīn.  Allāh ◣ has commissioned Prophet Muḥammad ◢ to perfect His recommended way of life for humankind.  In hadith No. 19-05, above, we saw how the prophet of Islam was the cause (Ḥujjat حُجَّة) of creation.  Our Imāms have been guardians of Islam after the departure of Prophet Muḥammad ◢.  The divinity would have definitely gone astray without Imām ʿAlī ▧, after the departure of Prophet Muḥammad ◢.  This is why Allāh ◣ tells him in this hadith that I would definitely not create you, if ʿAlī was not in existence”. 

 

Then, Ḥaḍrat Fāṭimah Zahrā ▨ is also mentioned: I would definitely not create you and ʿAlī if Fāṭimah was not in existence.”  With exception of ḥaḍrat ʿAlī ▧ all other Imāms are her offspring ◇, as the purified progeny of Prophet Muḥammad .  They have been the Guardians of Islam and the cause (al-Ḥujjah) of creation of all beings.  Therefore, if Ḥaḍrat Fāṭimah Zahrā ▨ was not in existence, the existence of Prophet Muḥammad ◢ and Ḥaḍrat ʿAlī ▧ as well as the entire being would not have fulfilled Allāh’s intention of creation[vi].

19-07 OtherḤujaj (causes) of Creation

  فَلَو لاكُم مَا خَلَقتُ الدُنيَا وَ لا الآخِرة وَ لا الجَنَّة وَ لا النَّار.

پس اگر شما (تو و علی و فاطمه) نبودید من دنیا و آخرت و بهشت و دوزخ را نمی آفریدم.

Then I would not create this world, nor the hereafter, nor the paradise, and nor the hell, if you (yourself, ʿAlī, and Fāṭimah ) were not in existence.

19-08 More Confirmation

وَ لَو لاكُمَا لَمَا خَلَقتُ الاَفلاك.

و اگر تو و علی نبودید محققا من افلاک را نیآفریدم.

And I would definitely not create the celestial beings, if you and ʿAlī were not in existence.

19-09 Allāh Takes the Oath Regarding the Cause of Creation

...يَا مُحَمَّدُ وَ عِزَّتِي وَ جَلَالِي لَوْلَاكَ مَا خَلَقْتُ آدَمَ وَ لَوْ لَا عَلِيٌّ مَا خَلَقْتُ الْجَنَّةَ... فَلَا يَدْخُلُ الْجَنَّةَ لَكُمَا عَدُوٌّ وَ لَا يَدْخُلُ النَّارَ لَكُمَا وَلِيٌّ وَ بِذَلِكَ أَقْسَمْتُ عَلَى نَفْسِي.

... ای محمد به عزت و جلالم قسم که اگر تو نبودی، آدم را نمى‏آفريدم و اگر علی نبود بهشت را نمیآفریدم... و کسی که دشمن شما دو نفر باشد داخل بهشت نمیشود و کسی که دوست شما دو نفر باشد داخل آتش نمیشود و من در این مورد (به عزّت و جلال) خودم قسم میخورم.

…O Muḥammad  I take the oath upon my Invincibility and upon my Majesty that I would not create ’Ādam if you were not in existence, and I would not create the paradise if ʿAlī was not in existence...Whoever is an enemy of you two, won’t enter the paradise, and whoever is a friend of you two, won’t enter the Fire; and I take the oath upon myself (my Invincibility and Majesty) regarding this [fact].

19-10 For whom this world was created?

إِنَّ آدَمَ لَمَّا أَكْرَمَهُ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى ذِكْرُهُ بِإِسْجَادِ مَلَائِكَتِهِ لَهُ وَ بِإِدْخَالِهِ الْجَنَّةَ قَالَ فِي نَفْسِهِ «هَلْ خَلَقَ اللَّهُ بَشَراً أَفْضَلَ مِنِّي»؟  فَعَلِمَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ مَا وَقَعَ فِي نَفْسِهِ فَنَادَاهُ ارْفَعْ رَأْسَكَ يَا آدَمُ فَانْظُرْ إِلَى سَاقِ عَرْشِي.  فَرَفَعَ آدَمُ رَأْسَهُ فَنَظَرَ إِلَى سَاقِ الْعَرْشِ.  فَوَجَدَ عَلَيْهِ مَكْتُوباً «لا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَ زَوْجَتُهُ فَاطِمَةُ سَيِّدَةُ نِسَاءِ الْعَالَمِينَ وَ الْحَسَنُ وَ الْحُسَيْنُ سَيِّدَا شَبَابِ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ» فَقَالَ آدَمُ «يَا رَبِّ مَنْ هَؤُلَاءِ» فَقَالَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ « يَا آدَمُ هَؤُلَاءِ ذُرِّيَّتُكَ وَ هُمْ خَيْرٌ مِنْكَ وَ مِنْ جَمِيعِ خَلْقِي وَ لَوْلَاهُمْ مَا خَلَقْتُكَ وَ لَا خَلَقْتُ الْجَنَّةَ وَ النَّارَ وَ لَا السَّمَاءَ وَ الْأَرْض‏.»

همانا هنگامى كه خداوند تعالی با گراميداشت یاد آدم به فرشتگان دستور داد تا به او سجده كنند و او را وارد بهشت ساخت، آدم با خود فکر کرد: آيا پروردگار، بشرى گرانمايه‏تر از من آفريده است؟ خداوند كه از اين خطور قلبى آدم آگاه بود به او فرمود: اى آدم سرت را بلند كن و به ساق عرش من بنگر.  آدم سرش را بلند كرد و بر ساق عرش نظر کرد.  ديد كه بر آن نوشته است «معبود بر حقّى نيست مگر خدا، محمّد رسول خدا بوده، على، فرزند ابو طالب، امير مؤمنان است، همسرش فاطمه برترين زنان جهان، و حسن و حسين سرور جوانان اهل بهشت اند» آدم پرسید «پروردگارا!  آنان چه اشخاصى هستند؟»  خداوند عزّ و جلّ فرمود «اى آدم آنان فرزندان تو هستند، و آنها از تو و همه آفريدگان من بهتر مى‏باشند.  و اگر آنان نبودند نه تو را مى‏آفريدم، نه بهشت و جهنّم را و نه آسمان و زمين را.»

Verily, when Allāh held Ādam dear, by ordering angels to prostrate themselves in his respect, and by letting him enter the paradise, he (Ādam) wondered Has Allāh created anyone better than me?  Reading his mind, Allāh interjected Raise your head Ādam, and look at the Trunk of My Throne. Ādam raised his head and looked at the Trunk of the Throne.  He saw this verdict recorded on it There is no god except Allāh, Muḥammad is Allāhs Messenger, ʿAlī ibn Abi Ṭālib is leader of the Believers, Fāṭimah is the Lady of all women in all worlds, and Ḥasan and Ḥusayn are the two masters of the youth destined for the paradise. Then Ādam asked who are these people, O my Lord?  Allāh replied “O’ Ādam!  They are your offspring, and they are better than you, and better than all my created beings, and I would not create you, nor the paradise nor the hell, nor the sky nor the earth, if they were not in existence.

19-11 Nūr (Light) Of Allāh, the Source of Nubuwwah and Wilāyah

مُحَمَّداً وَ عَلِيّاً كَانَا نُوراً بَيْنَ يَدَيِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ قَبْلَ خَلْقِ الْخَلْقِ بِأَلْفَيْ عَامٍ وَ أَنَّ الْمَلَائِكَةَ لَمَّا رَأَ تْ ذَلِكَ النُّورَ رَأَ تْ لَهُ أَصْلًا قَدْ تَشَعَّبَ مِنْهُ شُعَاعٌ لَامِعٌ فَقَالَتْ إِلَهَنَا وَ سَيِّدَنَا مَا هَذَا النُّورُ فَأَوْحَى اللَّهُ تَبَارَكَ وَ تَعَالَى إِلَيْهِمْ هَذَا نُورٌ مِنْ نُورِي أَصْلُهُ نُبُوَّةٌ وَ فَرْعُهُ إِمَامَةٌ أَمَّا النُّبُوَّةُ فَلِمُحَمَّدٍ عَبْدِي وَ رَسُولِي وَ أَمَّا الْإِمَامَةُ فَلِعَلِيٍّ حُجَّتِي وَ وَلِيِّي وَ لَوْلَاهُمَا مَا خَلَقْتُ خَلْقِي.‏

محمّد و علىّ در پيشگاه حضرت حقّ، عزّ و جلّ، دوهزار سال پيش از اينكه مخلوقات آفريده شوند، هر دو يك نور بودند و فرشتگان وقتى آن نور را مشاهده كردند ريشه‏اى برايش ديدند كه شعاع درخشانى از آن منشعب شده، پس عرض كردند: اى معبود ما و بزرگ ما، اين نور چيست؟ خداوند تبارک و تعالی به ايشان وحى فرستاد: "اين فروغى است از نور من كه ريشه آن نبوّت و شاخه‏اش امامت مى‏باشد، و امّا نبوّت براى بنده و فرستاده‏ام محمّد است، و امامت براى حجّت و ولىّ من، علىّ است، و اگر اين دو نمى‏بودند مخلوقات را نمى‏آفريدم‏."

Muḥammad and ʿAlī existed in the presence of Allāh, Jalla Jalāluhu, in form of Nūr (Light), two thousand years before He created the creation.  When the angels saw the nūr, they saw a root for it from which a brilliant ray was branched off.  They asked O Allāh, our Lord, what is this nūr?  Allāh, Tabārak wa Taʿālā, revealed to them by Waḥy This is a luminosity from My Nūr; its root is nubuwwah, and its branch is Imāmah [Wilāyah].  However, the nubuwwah is for Muḥammad, My obedient worshipper, My Rasūl (Messenger), and the Imāmah is for My Ḥujjat, My Waliyy.  And I would not create My Creation if they [Muḥammad and ʿAlī ▩] were not in existence.

19-12 Prophet of Compassion, Establisher of Ḥujjat (Final Proof)

لَمَّا خَلَقَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى آدَمَ وَ نَفَخَ فِيهِ مِنْ رُوحِهِ عَطَسَ آدَمُ فَقَالَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ فَأَوْحَى اللَّهُ تَعَالَى إِلَيْهِ حَمِدَنِي عَبْدِي وَ عِزَّتِي وَ جَلَالِي لَوْ لَا عَبْدَانِ أُرِيدُ أَنْ أَخْلُقَهُمَا فِي دَارِ الدُّنْيَا مَا خَلَقْتُكَ قَالَ إِلَهِي فَيَكُونَانِ مِنِّي قَالَ نَعَمْ يَا آدَمُ ارْفَعْ رَأْسَكَ وَ انْظُرْ.  فَرَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَإِذَا هُوَ مَكْتُوبٌ عَلَى الْعَرْشِ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ مُحَمَّدٌ نَبِيُّ الرَّحْمَةِ عَلِيٌّ مُقِيمُ الْحُجَّةِ ...      

موقعی كه خداوند آدم را آفريد و از روح خودش بر او دميد حضرت آدم عطسه‏ کرد و گفت "الحمد اللَّه‏". پس خداى تعالى به آدم وحی فرمود "ای بنده ام مرا ستايش كردی. سوگند بعزّت و جلالم اگر دو بنده ای كه اراده کردم آنها را در دار دنیا خلق کنم نبودند ترا نمى‏آفريدم."  آدم پرسید "معبودا آیا آن دو بنده از [نسل] منند؟".  فرمود  "آرى اى آدم.  سرت را بلند کن و ببین."  آنوقت آدم سرش را بلند كرد و ديد كه بر فراز عرش ثبت شده است لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ مُحَمَّدٌ نَبِيُّ الرَّحْمَةِ عَلِيٌّ مُقِيمُ الْحُجَّةِ (خدائى جز الله وجود ندارد، محمّد پيامبر رحمت است، على برپا دارنده حجت و دلیل است)...

When Allāh created Ādam and breathed into him of His Spirit, Ādam sneezed, and said thanks to Allāh.”  Then Allāh, the exalted, said to him You thanked me O my obedient worshipper.  I take the oath upon My Invincibility and My Majesty, that I would not create you, if the two individuals that i had determined to create in this world, were not in existence.  Ādam asked Are they from me, my Allāh?  He replied Yes! O Ādam, raise your head and look!  So, Ādam raised his head and noticed it was stamped upon the ʿArsh[vii] There is no god except Allāh, Muḥammad is the prophet of compassion, ʿAlī is the establisher of Ḥujjat.”…

19-13

قال رسول الله :  يا علی ... و لولانا لم يخلق الجنة و النار و لا الأنبياء و لا الملائكة...

حضرت رسول اکرم به حضرت علي فرمودند يا علی ...و اگر ما نبوديم بهشت و جهنم و انبیاء و ملائکه خلق نمی شدند...

Prophet Muḥammad ◢ said to ḥaḍrat ʿAlī“O ʿAlī … Neither the paradise nor the hell, neither the prophets nor the angels were created if we two were not in existence…”

19-14 ʿAlī, the Ḥujjat ul-Llāh

... وَ لَوْلَاهُ مَا خَلَقَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ شَيْئاً مِمَّا خَلَقَ.

... و اگر او (حضرت علی ) نبود خداوند عزّ و جلّ چيزی از آنچه را که خلق کرده خلق نميکرد.

…And Allāh ◣ would not create any creation, if he (talking about ḥaḍrat ʿAlī ▧) was not in existence.

19-15 Removal of Dominion of Satan, Adams Urge For the Advent of Muḥammad

...“Then said God: ‘Depart, cursed one, from my presence!’  Then satan departed; whereupon God said to Adam [and] Eve, who were both weeping:  ‘Go ye forth from paradise, and do penance, and let not your hope fail, for I will send your son in such wise that your seed shall lift the dominion of satan from off the human race; for he who shall come, My messenger, to him will I give all things.’  God hid himself, and the angel Michael drove them fort from paradise.  Whereupon Adam turning him round, saw written above the gate [of Paradise]:  ‘There is only one God, and Mohammed is messenger of God’.  Whereupon, weeping, he (Adam) said:  May it be pleasing to God, O my son, that thou come quickly and draw us out of misery.

19-16 Allāh’s Promise of Global Salvation and Mercy through the Seed of Ismāʿil

In reply to Andrew and other disciples, Jesus said:  Verily, I say unto you, that every prophet when he is come hath borne to one nation only the mark of the mercy of God.  And so their words were not extended save to that people to which they were sent.  But the messenger of  God[viii], when he shall come, God shall give to him as it were the seal of his hand, insomuch that he shall carry salvation and mercy to all the nations of the world that shall receive his doctrine.  He shall come with power upon the ungodly, and shall destroy idolatry, insomuch that he shall make satan confounded.  For, so promised God to Abraham, saying: Behold, in thy seed I will bless all the tribes of the earth, and as thou hast broken in pieces the idols, O Abraham, even so shall thy seed do.. James answered:  O master, tell us in whom this promise was made; for the Jews say in Isaac, and the Ishmaelites say in Ishmael..

 

After an interesting conversation between Prophet ʿIsā and James and other disciples, in the last verse of this chapter (43), Prophet ʿIsā confirms to his disciples: Believe me, for verily I say to you, that the promise was made in Ishmael, not in Isaac.

19-17 Moses seeks Allāh’s Grace through offspring of Ismāʿil

Whereupon said the scribe [to Jesus]:  I have seen an old book written by the hand of Moses and Joshua (he who made the sun stand still as thou hast done), servants and prophets of God, which book is the true book of Moses.  Therein is written that Ishmael is the father of Messiah, and Isaac the father of the messenger of the Messiah.  And thus saith the book, that Moses said: Lord God of Israel, mighty and merciful, manifest to thy servant the splendour of thy glory.  Whereupon God showed him (Moses) his messenger in the arms of Ishmael, and Ishmael in the arms of Abraham.  Nigh to Ishmael stood Isaac, in whose arms was a child, who with his finger pointed to the messenger of God[ix], saying: This is he for whom God hath created all things. 

 

Whereupon Moses cried out with joy O Ishmael, thou hast in thine arms all the world and paradise!  Be mindful of me, Gods servant, that I may find grace in Gods sight by means of thy son, for whom God hath made all.

Prophet ʿIsā , The Gospel of Barnabas:  Book No. 50, Ch. 191, messiah springeth from Ishmael.  This is he for whom God hath created all things.  O Ishmael, thou hast in thine arms all the world and paradise, p. 238.

 

19-18 Prejudice against the seed of Ismāʿil is a chronic disease

When Jesus explained As God liveth, so greatly did Abraham love God, that he not only brake in pieces the false idols and forsook his father and mother, but was willing to slay his own son in obedience to God, [then] he [Jesus ] was asked by the high priest ‘… who was this son of Abraham?.  Jesus answered The zeal of thine honour, O God, enflameth me, and I cannot hold my peace.  Verily, I say, the son of Abraham was Ishmael; from whom must be descended the Messiah promised to Abraham, that in him should all the tribes of the earth be blessed.  Then was the [Jewish] high priest wroth, hearing this, and cried out: Let us stone this impious fellow, for he is an Ishmaelite, and hath spoken blasphemy against Moses and against the law of God.  Whereupon every scribe and Pharisee, with the elders of the people, took up stones to stone Jesus, who vanished from their eyes and went out of the temple.

Prophet ʿIsā , The Gospel of Barnabas:  Book No. 50, Ch. 208, the Messiah promised to Abraham is descended from Ishmael. pp. 255-256.

19-19 Prophet Muḥammad takes away the infamy off Prophet ʿIsā

 ...I tell thee [Barnabas] that if I had not been called God I should have been carried into paradise when I shall depart from the world, whereas now I shall not go thither until the judgement.  Now thou seest if I have cause to weep.  Know O Barnabas, that for this I must have great persecution, and shall be sold by one of my disciples for thirty pieces of money.  Whereupon I am sure that, he who shall sell me shall be slain in my name, for that God shall take me up from the earth, and shall change the appearance of the traitor so that everyone shall believe him to be me.  Nevertheless, when he dieth an evil death, I shall abide in that dishonour for a long time in the world.  But when Mohammad shall come, the sacred messenger of God, that infamy shall be taken away[x].  And this shall God do because I have confessed the truth of the Messiah; who shall give me this reward, that I shall be known to be alive and to be a stranger to that death of infamy…’

19-20 Muḥammad ◢ shall Eradicate the Ungodly Contaminations Imputed To Prophet ʿIsā

Jesus answered:  Everything that conformeth to the book of Moses, that receive ye for true; seeing that God is one, the truth is one; whence it followeth that the doctrine is one and the meaning of the doctrine is one; and therefore the faith is one.  Verily I say unto you that if the truth had not been erased from the book of Moses, God would not have given to David, our father, the second.  And if the book of David had not been contaminated, God would not have committed the Gospel to me; seeing that the Lord our God is unchangeable, and hath spoken but one message to all men.  Wherefore, when the messenger of God [Prophet Muḥammad ◢] shall come, he shall come to cleanse away all wherewith the ungodly have contaminated my book.

19-21 Muḥammad is the Prophet of Mercy, according to Jesus .

...The disciples answered, ‘O Master, who shall that man be of whom you speak, who shall come into the world?’  Jesus answered with joy of heart: ‘He is Mohammed, messenger of God, and when he cometh into the world, even as the rain maketh the earth to bear fruit when for a long time it hath not rained, even so shall he be occasion of good works among men, through the abundant mercy which he shall bring.  For he is a white cloud full of the mercy of God, which mercy God shall sprinkle upon the faithful like rain.’

19-22

وَ ما أَرْسَلْناكَ إِلاَّ رَحْمَةً لِلْعالَمينَ ((107

و ما تو را جز رحمتى براى جهانيان نفرستاديم.

And We did not send you but as a mercy to all the nations of the world.

Sūrah al-Anbiyā (21), Āyah 107.

19-23 Nubuwwah reveals a colossal deception

...And though I have been innocent in the world, since men have called me “God,” and “Son of God,” God, in order that I be not mocked of the demons on the day of judgment, hath willed that I be mocked of men in this world by the death of Judas, making all men to believe that I died upon the cross.  And this mocking shall continue until the advent of Mohammed, the messenger of God, who, when he shall come, shall reveal this deception to those who believe in God’s Law[xi].

 

Having thus spoken, Jesus said: ‘Thou are just, O Lord our God, because to thee, only, belongeth honour and glory without end.’

19-24 From Darkness Of Polytheism Into The Light Of Monotheism

الر كِتابٌ أَنْزَلْناهُ إِلَيْكَ لِتُخْرِجَ النَّاسَ مِنَ الظُّلُماتِ إِلَى النُّورِ بِإِذْنِ رَبِّهِمْ إِلى‏ صِراطِ الْعَزيزِ الْحَميدِ

الف. لام. را. (ای پیامبر، اين) كتابى است كه بر تو نازل كرديم، تا مردم را بفرمان پروردگارشان از تاريكيها (ى شرك، ظلم و جهل) خارج کرده، به سوى روشنايى (توحید، عدل و علم) در آورى، بسوى راه خداوند عزيز و حميد.

Alif, Lām, Rā.  [O Prophet, this is] a Book We have sent down to you so that you may bring the humankind out of the darkness (of polytheism, injustice, and ignorance) into the light (of monotheism, justice, and knowledge), by permission of their Lord, [leading them] to the Path of the Invincible, the Praiseworthy.

Sūrah Ibrāhīm (14), āyah 1.

19-25 Monotheism is Allāh’s “Stronghold”

 

اللَّه عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ: «لا إِلَهَ إِلاّ اللَّهُ» حِصْنِي فَمَنْ دَخَلَ حِصْنِي أَمِنَ مِنْ عَذَابِي.

خداوند عزَّ و جلَّ میفرماید: «لا إِلهَ إِلاّ اللَّهُ» حصار من است و هر كه در حصار من در آيد از عذاب من در امان است.

Allāh  ◣ says: [the verity of] »Lā Ilāha illā Allāh[xii]« is “My Stronghold”, and whoever enters “My Stronghold” is safeguarded against my punishment.

 

Al-Ḥadith al-Qudsiyyah, Book No. 18, p. 235, ch. 41, h. 8.

19-26 Clarification by Al-Imām al-Riḍā  

سَمِعْتُ ... سَمِعْتُ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ يَقُولُ: «لا إِلَهَ إِلاّ اللَّهُ» حِصْنِي فَمَنْ دَخَلَ حِصْنِي أَمِنَ مِنْ عَذَابِي... بِشُرُوطِهَا وَ أَنَا مِنْ شُرُوطِهَا.

شنیدم ...شنیدم از خداوند عزَّ و جلَّ که ميفرمايد: «لا إِلهَ إِلاّ اللَّهُ» حصار من است و هر كه در حصار من در آيد از عذاب من در امان است... با شرط و شروطی؛ و من از شروط آنم [همانطور که از حدیث بعد هم معلوم است منظور از "من" کل ولایت مطلقه علی ابن ابی طالب است].

I heard…I heard Allāh   says: [the verity of] Lā Ilāha illā Allāh” is “My Stronghold”, and whoever enters “My Stronghold”is safeguarded against my punishment...with certain conditions.  And I am one of the conditions [By “I” he refers to the wide-ranging unlimited Wilāyah of ʿAlī ibn ’Abi Ṭālib ◇, as is quite obvious in the following ḥadith, No. 19-27]. 

 

This very important ḥadith shows clearly that even the most important Principle of Islam (i.e. Monotheism expressed by the verity of Lā Ilāha illā Allāh) is incomplete without the Wilāyah of ʿAli ibn ’Abi Ṭālib ◇.  We know that the entire dīn of Islam is incomplete without the Wilāyah (please refer to section 3, Summary of the event of Ghadīr Khum).

19-27 Wilāyah fortifies Allāh’s Stronghold”

الله تبارك و تعالى: وَلَايَةُ عَلِيٍّ حِصْنِي مَنْ دَخَلَ حِصْنِي أَمِنَ نَارِي.

خداوند تبارک و تعالی: ولایت علی حصار من است و هرکه در حصار من در آید از آتش [جهنم] من در امان است.

Allāh  : The Wilāyah of ʿAlī is “My Stronghold”, and whoever enters “My Stronghold” is safeguarded against my Fire (of hell).

Al-Ḥadith al-Qudsiyyah, Book No. 18, p. 235, ch. 41, h. 9.

19-28 the Prime Objective of the Nubuwwah

بُعِثْتُ بِمَكَارِمِ الْأَخْلَاق‏.

من [از طرف خداوند متعال] براى [تبلیغ] مكارم اخلاق مبعوث شده ام.

I am appointed [by Allāh ◣] for [propagation of] “The Most Excellent Morality (مکارم الاخلاق[xiii])”.

Prophet Muḥammad, Book No. 44, ch. 95, p. 353, and book No. 3, v. 66, p.394.

19-29 Allāh’s Judgment

وَ إِنَّكَ لَعَلى‏ خُلُقٍ عَظيمٍ (4).

و تو [اى محمّد] بواقع داراى خُلق و خوى بسيار والايى هستى

And [O, Mohammad!] verily, you are truly a Man of high level character.

Sūrah al-Qalam (68), āyah 4.

19-30 the Basic Mission of Prophet Muammad

وَ ما أَرْسَلْناكَ إِلاَّ كَافَّةً لِلنَّاسِ بَشيراً وَ نَذيراً وَ لكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ النَّاسِ لا يَعْلَمُونَ (28)

و ما تو را نفرستادیم جز برای بشارت (به رحمت خدا) و هشدار (به عذاب او) به همه انسانها، ليكن بيشتر مردم نمى‏دانند. (28)

And [O Prophet] We did not appoint you but as a deliverer of “good tidings” (about the Mercy of Allāh ), as well as a giver of “warning” (about His Wrath ) to all human beings.  But most people do not know.

Sūrah Sabā (34), āyah 28.

19-31 Further Missions of the Last Prophet of Allāh

يٰأَيُّهَا النَّبىِ‏ُّ إِنَّا أَرْسَلْنَكَ شَهِدًا وَ مُبَشِّرًا وَ نَذِيرًا (45).  وَ دَاعِيًا إِلىَ اللَّهِ بِإِذْنِهِ وَ سِرَاجًا مُّنِيرًا (46)

اى پيامبر [اسلام]!  محققا ما تو را به عنوان یک شاهد و نويد بخش و هشدار دهنده فرستادیم (45).  و [همچنین به عنوان] دعوت كننده به سوی خدا به اذن او، و چراغى نور بخش (46).

O Prophet! We have, indeed, sent you as a witness, a herald of good tidings and a warner (45), and as a caller towards Allāh by His permission, and as a radiant Sirāj (Light).

Sūrah al-Aḥzāb (33), āyāt 45-46.

19-32 Set of excellent exemplars

لَّقَدْ كاَنَ لَكُمْ فىِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ.

قطعاً در وجود [مبارک] رسول خدا براى شما سرمشق [هائی] نيكو نهفته است [که به آن اقتدا کنید].

Verily there is a set of excellent exemplars in the Messenger of Allāh for you [to follow].

Sūrah Al-Aḥzāb (33), āyah 21.

19-33

مَا ضَلَّ صَاحِبُكمُ‏ْ وَ مَا غَوَى‏(2) وَ مَا يَنطِقُ عَنِ الهَوَىٰ(3) إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا وَحْىٌ يُوحَى‏(4)

سرپرست شما [حضرت محمّد ] گمراه نشده و مقصد را گم نكرده است، (2) و از روى هواى نفس سخن نمى‏گويد! (3) آنچه مى‏گويد چيزى جز وحى كه بر او نازل شده نيست! (4)

Addressing to all: Your [Holy] Companion (The Prophet ◢) is neither astray nor deviated (from the Straight Path), nor does he speak out of [his own] desire.  It is not but Waḥy that is revealed (which he relates to you).

 Sūrah Al-Najm (53), Āyāt 1-4.

19-34 Purification of the Wilāyah ◇ by Allāh, Himself ◣

...إِنَّما يُريدُ اللَّهُ لِيُذْهِبَ عَنْكُمُ الرِّجْسَ أَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ وَ يُطَهِّرَكُمْ تَطْهيراً (33)

...جز اين نيست كه اراده خداوند بر این است که هرگونه پليدى را از شما اهل بيت بزداید، و شما را به طور شايسته ای پاك و مطهّر گرداند. (33)

Verily, it is not anything else except that Allāhs Decision is to remove any impurity from you, Ahl al-Bayt (members of the Messengers Household), and to purify [all of] you, perfect purification.

Sūrah Al-Aḥzāb (33), āyah 33.

19-35 the two precious things (al-Thaqalayn) Will Never Separate

إِنِّي تَارِكٌ فِيكُمُ الثَّقَلَيْنِ مَا إِنْ تَمَسَّكْتُمْ بِهِمَا لَنْ تَضِلُّوا بَعْدِي كِتَابَ اللَّهِ وَ عِتْرَتِي أَهْلَ بَيْتِي وَ إِنَّهُمَا لَنْ يَفْتَرِقَا حَتَّى يَرِدَا عَلَيَّ الْحَوْضَ‏.

همانا من دو چيز گرانبها در ميان شما مى‏گذارم كه اگر شما بر آن دو چنگ بزنيد هرگز بعد از من گمراه نخواهيد شد، كتاب خدا و عترت من، اهل بیت من.  محققا اين دو از هم جدا نميشوند تا اينكه در كنار حوض [کوثر] بر من وارد شوند

Verily, I am leaving among you two precious things (al-Thaqalayn), that you will never be misled after me if you hold fast to them (both): The Book of Allāh , and [the tradition of] my ʿItrah, my Household (Ahl al-Bayt).  Verily, the two will never separate until they come back to me by the [Kawthar] Pond.

Prophet Muḥammad, Book No. 33, v. 1, p. 131.

19-36  Āl-i Muḥammad fountainhead of goodness

مَعرِفَةُ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ بَرَاءَةٌ مِنَ النَّارِ، وَحُبُّ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ جَوَازٌ عَلَیٰ ٱلصِّراطِ، وَالوَلايَةٌ لِآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ أمانٌ مِنَ العَذَابِ.  

شناخت آل محمّد سبب رهایی از آتش، و محبت نسبت به آل محمد مجوز عبور از [پل] صراط، و ولایت آل محمد ایمنی از عذاب است.

Cognition of the progeny of Muḥammad ◢ is clearance from the Fire, and the love of the progeny of Muḥammad ◢ is the license to pass the Ṣirāṭ[xiv], and the loyalty to the progeny of Muḥammad ◢ is immunity from the tribulation.

19-37  Cognition Of The Wilāyah Is The Key To Every Virtue

أيُّ الأعمالِ هُوَ أفضَلُ بَعدَ المَعرِفَةِ؟ قَالَ (الامام الصادق): مَا مِن شَيءٍ بَعدَ المَعرِفَةِ يَعدِلُ هَذِه الصَلاةَ، وَ لا بَعدَ المَعرِفَةِ وَ الصَّلاةِ شَيءٌ يَعدِلُ الزَکاةَ، وَ لا بَعدَ ذَلِکَ شيءٌ يَعدِلُ الصَّومَ، وَ لا بَعدَ ذلکَ شَيءٌ يَعدِلُ الحَجَّ، وَ فَاتِحَةُ ذَلِکُ کُلِّه مَعرِفَتُنَا وَ خَاتِمَتُهُ مَعرِفَتُنا.

پس از شناخت و معرفت خدا کدام عمل برتر است؟ حضرت (امام صادق فرمود:  پس از شناخت، هیچ چیز برابر این نماز نیست و پس از شناخت نماز هیچ چیز با زکات برابر نیست و پس از اینها چیزی با روزه برابر نیست و پس از اینها چیزی با حج مساوی نیست و آغاز و پایان همۀ آنها شناخت ماست.

Someone asked al-ʼImām aṣ-Ṣādiq what is the best act next to the cognition of Allāh ◣?  He replied: There is nothing equal to the Ṣalāt, next to His cognition , and there is nothing equal to the Zakāt, next to the cognition of Allāh , and the alāt.  And next to that, there is nothing equal to the Ṣawm (fasting); and next to that there is nothing equal to Ḥajj; and the beginning for all of this is cognition of us, and its end is cognition of us.

This means that without good acknowledgment, understanding, appreciation, respect, loyalty, and love of the Wilāyah, one cannot get to the good acknowledgment, understanding, appreciation, respect, loyalty, and love of Allāh ◣, nor to the realization of the inner spirit of Ṣalāt, Zakāt, Ṣawm, and Ḥajj.

19-38  A Great Gift

مَنْ مَنَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ بِمَعْرِفَةِ أَهْلِ بَيْتِي وَ وَلَايَتِهِمْ فَقَدْ جَمَعَ اللَّهُ لَهُ الْخَيْرَ كُلَّهُ.

کسی که خدا به شناخت اهل بیت من و ولایتشان بر او منّت نهاده بی تردید همۀ خیر را برای او گرد آورده است.

Allāh ◣ has gathered all the goodness for one who is endowed by Him the cognition of my Ahl al-Bayt and their Wilāyah.

19-39 Love of Wilāyah Is Curtailed Without Guarding Against Their Enemies

 يَا عَلِيُّ وَ الَّذِي بَعَثَنِي بِالنُّبُوَّةِ وَ اصْطَفَانِي عَلَى جَمِيعِ الْبَرِّيَّةِ لَوْ أَنَّ عَبْداً عَبَدَ اللَّهَ أَلْفَ عَامٍ مَا قَبِلَ اللَّهُ ذَلِكَ مِنْهُ إِلَّا بِوَلَايَتِكَ وَ وَلَايَةِ الْأَئِمَّةِ مِنْ وُلْدِكَ وَ إِنَّ وَلَايَتَكَ لَا تُقْبَلُ إِلَّا بِالْبَرَاءَةِ مِنْ أَعْدَائِكَ وَ أَعْدَاءِ الْأَئِمَّةِ مِنْ وُلْدِكَ بِذَلِكَ أَخْبَرَنِي جَبْرَئِيلُ فَمَنْ شاءَ فَلْيُؤْمِنْ وَ مَنْ شاءَ فَلْيَكْفُر(السّورة الکهف 18، الآیة 29).

اى على! قسم به کسی كه مرا به پيغمبرى برانگيخت و بر همه خلق جهان برگزيد اگر بنده‏اى هزار سال خدا را عبادت کند خداوند این [عبادت] را از او قبول نمیکند مگر به ولایت تو و ولایت امامان از فرزندان تو، و حقیقت آنکه ولايت تو پذيرفته نمیشود مگر به برائت از دشمنان تو و دشمنان امامان از نسل تو.  این [حقیقت] را جَبرَئيل به من خبر داده است.  پس هر كه می خواهد [این حقیقت را] بپذيرد و هر كه می خواهد [این حقیقت را] بپوشاند (سوره الکهف (18)، آیه 29).

OʿAlī!, I take the oath upon He Who selected me among the entire humankind and appointed me to Prophethood, that if an obedient worshipper worships Allāh  ◣ for a thousand years, Allāh  ◣ will not accept it from him, unless it is along with your Wilāyah and the Wilāyah of the ’Imāms from your progeny.  And verily, your Wilāyah is not accepted unless it guards against your enemies and the enemies of the ’Imāms from your progeny.  This is what Jabra’īl  ▧ has informed me.  So, whoever wishes will believe [this fact], and whoever wishes shall cover it up (Sūrah al-kahf (18), āyah 29).

19-40 Useless Worship

إِنَّ أَفْضَلَ الْبِقَاعِ مَا بَيْنَ الرُّكْنِ وَ الْمَقَامِ وَ لَوْ أَنَّ رَجُلًا عُمِّرَ مَا عُمِّرَ نُوحٌ ع فِي قَوْمِهِ (أَلْفَ سَنَةٍ إِلَّا خَمْسِينَ) عاماً يَصُومُ نَهَاراً وَ يَقُومُ لَيْلًا فِي ذَلِكَ الْمَقَامِ ثُمَّ لَقِيَ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ بِغَيْرِ وِلَايَتِنَا لَمْ يَنْتَفِعْ بِذَلِكَ شَيْئا.

براستى كه پر فضیلت ترین محل [در دنیا] بين "ركن" و "مقام" است.  و اگر شخصی به اندازه حضرت نوح عليه السّلام عمر کند (نهصد و پنجاه سال)، و در این مكان [مقدّس] روزها را به روزه گرفتن و شبها را به عبادت خدا بپردازد، و بدون ولایت ما به ديدار خداوند عزّ و جلّ روانه شود، هيچ بهره‏اى از این [عبادتها] نخواهد برد.

Verily, the most sacred place [in this world] is between “The Rukn” and “The Maqām” [in Makkah].   And if a person should live the life of Prophet Noah (nine hundred and fifty years), and should keep fasting every day and worshipping every night in this most sacred place, and then should return to Allāh ◣ without [cognition of] our Wilāyah, then all his endeavour would render useless.

19-41 Most Beautiful Names (Al-Asmāʼ ul-Ḥusnā)

فِي قَوْلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ، "وَ لِلَّهِ الْأَسْماءُ الْحُسْنى‏ فَادْعُوهُ بِها..."، قَالَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ : نَحْنُ وَ اللَّهِ الْأَسْمَاءُ الْحُسْنَى الَّتِي لَا يَقْبَلُ اللَّهُ مِنَ الْعِبَادِ عَمَلًا إِلَّا بِمَعْرِفَتِنَا.

در رابطه با کلام خداوند عزّ و جلّ، "وَ لِلَّهِ الْأَسْماءُ الْحُسْنى‏ فَادْعُوهُ بِها..." حضرت امام جعفر، الصّادق، فرمودند: به خداوند سبحان قسم که ما (اهل البیت) "اسماء الحسنای" او هستیم  که خداوند متعال عمل بندگان خود را جز به شناخت و معرفت ما قبول نمیکند.

In connection to the Word of Allāh “To Allāh belong Most Beautiful Names (al-Asmāʼ ul-Ḥusnā), so appeal to Him by these names…[xv], al-Imām aṣ-Ṣādiq said: I swear by Allāh that we (the Ahl al-Bayt) are “Al-Asmāʼ ul-Ḥusnā[xvi]”; Allāh ◣ does not accept any deed from His worshippers except for their cognition of us (the Ahl al-Bayt).

19-42  “The Blessed Tree” is the Wilāyah

عَمْرِو بْنِ حُرَيْثٍ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ قَوْلِ اللَّهِ ...كَلِمَةً طَيِّبَةً كَشَجَرَةٍ طَيِّبَةٍ أَصْلُهَا ثَابِتٌ وَ فَرْعُهَا فىِ السَّمَاء قَالَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ أَصْلُهَا وَ أَمِيرُالْمُؤْمِنِينَ فَرْعُهَا وَ الْأَئِمَّةُ مِنْ ذُرِّيَّتِهِمَا أَغْصَانُهَا وَ عِلْمُ الْأَئِمَّةِ ثَمَرَتُهَا وَ شِيعَتُهُمُ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ وَرَقُهَا هَلْ فِيهَا فَضْلٌ قَالَ قُلْتُ لَا وَ اللَّهِ قَالَ "وَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ الْمُؤْمِنَ لَيُولَدُ فَتُورَقُ وَرَقَةٌ فِيهَا وَ إِنَّ الْمُؤْمِنَ لَيَمُوتُ فَتَسْقُطُ وَرَقَةٌ مِنْهَا."

عَمرِو بنِ حُرَيث گويد:  از امام صادق در باره کلام خداوند متعال «...سخن نیکو مثل درخت پاكى است كه ريشه‏اش محکم پا برجا ست و شاخه‏اش سر بآسمان كشيده... (آیه 24 سوره ابراهیم 14)» سوال کردم.  او میگوید حضرت فرمودند "رسول خدا ريشه آن درخت [پاک] است و امير المؤمنين تنه آن، امامان از نسل آنها شاخه‏هاى آن، علم امامان ميوه آن، و شيعيان مؤمن ايشان برگهاى آنند.  آيا در آن درخت فضبلت ديگرى هم هست؟" عرض كردم: بخدا نخیر!   حضرت فرمودند "بخدا قسم كه چون مؤمنى متولد شود، برگى در آن درخت پيدا مى‏شود و چون مؤمنى ميميرد، برگى از آن درخت مى‏افتد."

ʿAmr ibn Ḥurayth said “I asked al-ʼImām aṣ-Ṣādiq about this Word from Allāh “…A good word is like a blessed tree; its root is steady and firm, and its trunk reaches out to the heavens... (Sūrah ’Ibrāhīm (14), āyah 42).”  He said that the ʼImām replied “The prophet of Allāh is its root,  the commander of the believers (ʿAli ) is its trunk, the ʼImāms from their progeny are its branches, the knowledge of the ʼImāms are its fruit, and the believers among their followers are its leaves.  Can you think of any other virtue in it?”  I said no, by Allāh ◣!  The ʼImām continued: I swear by Allāh that verily a new leaf is created in it when a believer is born, and a leaf falls down from it when a believer dies.”

19-43 

يَا عَلِيُّ خُلِقَ النَّاسُ مِنْ شَجَرٍ شَتَّى وَ خُلِقْتُ أَنَا وَ أَنْتَ مِنْ شَجَرَةٍ وَاحِدَة.

يا على!  مردم از درختهاى متعدده خلق شده‏اند و من و تو از يك درخت آفريده‏شده‏ايم‏.

O ʿAlī! People are created from different trees but you and I are created from one (unique) tree.

Prophet Muḥammad Book No. 16, v. 2, p. 73, h. 340.

19-44 

عَلِيٌّ مِنِّي وَ أَنَا مِنْ عَلِيٍّ مَنْ تَوَلَّى عَلِيّاً فَقَدْ تَوَلَّانِي‏.

على از منست و من از على ام.  هر كه علی را دوست بدارد قطعا مرا دوست میدارد‏.

ʿAlī is from me and I am from ʿAlī.  Whoever is a friend of ʿAlī he certainly is my friend.

19-45 ʿIṭrah Of the Prophet ◢ Are Centre of All Goodness

  مَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يَحْيَا حَيَاةً تُشْبِهُ حَيَاةَ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ، وَ يَمُوتَ مِيتَةً تُشْبِهُ مِيتَةَ الشُّهَدَاءِ وَ يَسْكُنَ الْجِنَانَ الَّتِي غَرَسَهَا الرَّحْمَنُ، فَلْيَتَوَلَّ عَلِيّاً وَ لْيُوَالِ وَلِيَّهُ، وَ لْيَقْتَدِ بِالْأَئِمَّةِ مِنْ بَعْدِهِ.  فَإِنَّهُمْ عِتْرَتِي، خُلِقُوا مِنْ طِينَتِي.  اللَّهُمَّ ارْزُقْهُمْ فَهْمِي وَ عِلْمِي.  وَ وَيْلٌ لِلْمُخَالِفِينَ لَهُمْ مِنْ أُمَّتِي.  اللَّهُمَّ لَا تُنِلْهُمْ شَفَاعَتِي.

کسی که علاقه دارد چون پیامبران زندگی کند و همچون شهیدان بميرد و در بهشتی زندگی کند که درختانش را خداوند رحمان کاشته، پس باید ولایت علی را بپذیرد و با دوستانش دوستی کند و به امامان پس از او اقتدا نماید.  زیرا آنان خاندان من هستند، و از طینت من آفریده شده اند.  خدایا!  فهم ودانش مرا روزی آنان قرار ده.  و وای بر مخالفانشان از امت من.  خدایا!  آنان (مخالفان) را به شفاعت من نرسان.

One who likes to live like the life of the prophets, and to die similar to the death of the Shuhadā, and to reside in the Garden that The Raḥmān ◣ has planted, then he must follow ʿAlī ▧, be friendly with his friend[s], and follow the ’Imāms after him ◇.   They are my ʿIṭrah, created from my nature.  Ya Allāh! Grant them ◇ my intellectual capacity and my knowledge.  And woe is to their opponents within my ummah[xvii]. Ya Allāh!  Please do not pass on my intercession to them.

19-46 the Luckiest Person

أسعَدُ النّاسِ مَن عَرَفَ فَضلَنَا، وَ تَقرّبَ إلی الله بِنَا، وَ أخلَصَ حُبَّنا، وَعَمِل بِما إليهِ نَدَبنا، وَ انتَهی عَمّا عَنهُ نَهينَا، فَذَاکَ مِنّا وَ هُوَ فِي دَارِ المُقَامَةِ مَعنَا.

خوشبخت ‏ترين مردم کسی است كه برتری ما را [بر ديگران] بشناسد و بوسيله ما بخداوند تعالى تقرّب جويد، محبّتش را براى ما [اهل بيت رسول اللّه (ص)] خالص كرده، به اموری که ما بر آن می خوانیم عمل كند، و از آنچه كه نهى ما نهيش ميكند كناره گيرد چنين كسى از ما است و در سراى اقامت [دائم] با ما است.

The luckiest person is one who acknowledges our betterness [over others], seeks nearness to Allāh ◣ through us (Ahl al-Bayt ▩), purifies his love [towards us], acts upon what we call for, and keeps away from what we disallow.  Then he is from us, and he is with us in the [permanent] abode.

19-47 Exact Numbers of Legitimate Imams to Avoid Disunion

الْأَئِمَّةُ بَعْدِي اثْنَا عَشَرَ عَدَدَ نُقَبَاءِ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ كُلُّهُمْ أُمَنَاءُ أَتْقِيَاءُ مَعْصُومُونَ‏

امامان بعد از من دوازده نفر ‏اند به عدد نقيبان و پيشوايان بنى اسرائيل جميع ايشان امناء اتقیاء معصوم اند.

There will be twelve ’Imams after me, the [same] number of Bani ’Isrā’l’s Nuqabā’[xviii].  All of them are Trustworthy, virtuous (incorruptible), and infallible (innocent).

19-48 Prophet Muammad Leaves No Room for Deviation

الْأَئِمَّةُ بَعْدِي اثْنَا عَشَرَ أَوَّلُهُمْ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ وَ آخِرُهُمُ الْقَائِم. هُمْ خُلَفَائِي وَ أَوْصِيَائِي وَ أَوْلِيَائِي وَ حُجَجُ اللَّهِ عَلَى أُمَّتِي بَعْدِي. الْمُقِرُّ بِهِمْ مُؤْمِنٌ وَ الْمُنْكِرُ لَهُمْ كَافِرٌ.

امامان بعد از من دوازده‏ نفر اند.  اوّلین آنها على ابن ابى طالب و آخِربن آنها "القائم (قائم به امر الله)" است.  بعد از من آنها خليفه ‏هاى من و وصيّان من و وليان من و حجتهاى خدا بر امت من هستند.  اقرار کنندگان بايشان مؤمن، و انكار کنندگانشان كافر اند.

There will be twelve Imams after me, the first one being ʿAlī ibn Abi Ṭālib, and the last one being al-Qāim  [bi ’Amr il-Llāh] [xix] .  They are my successors, my trustees, my Awliyā, and the final proofs of Allāh upon my followers, after me.  One who acknowledges them is a mumin, and one who denies them is a kāfir.

19-49 More Clarification to Avoid Deviation

وَ قَالَ لِحُسَيْنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ أَنْتَ إِمَامٌ ابْنُ إِمَامٍ وَ أَخُو إِمَامٍ أَبُو أَئِمَّةٍ تِسْعَةٍ تَاسِعُهُمْ قَائِمُهُمْ‏.

و رسول خدا به حسين بن على فرمود "تو امامى و برادر امامى و پدر نه امامى كه نهم ايشان قائم ايشانست."

Prophet Muḥammad ◢ told Ḥusayn ibn ʿAlī ▩“you are an ’Imām, and brother of an ’Imām, and father of nine ’Imāms, the ninth one being their Qā’im[xx] [bi ’Amr il-Llāh] ▩].”

19-50 Further Clarification

لَا يَضُرُّ هَذَا الدِّينَ مَنْ نَاوَأَهُ حَتَّى يَمْضِيَ اثْنَا عَشَرَ إِمَاماً كُلُّهُمْ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ‏.

ضرر نمیرساند به این دین کسی که با آن دشمنی و مخالفت کند.  [این دین] ادامه خواهد یافت تا دوازده امام، همگی از [نسل] قریش، بگذرند.

Anyone who rises painfully against this dīn cannot harm it.  It shall endure until twelve ’Imāms emerge, all from the Quraysh [progeny].

19-51 Fruit of Reviving the Cause of Wilāyah

رَحِمَ اللَّهُ عَبْداً أَحْيَا أَمْرَنَا فَقُلْتُ لَهُ وَ كَيْفَ يُحْيِي أَمْرَكُمْ قَالَ يَتَعَلَّمُ عُلُومَنَا وَ يُعَلِّمُهَا النَّاسَ.  فَإِنَّ النَّاسَ لَوْ عَلِمُوا مَحَاسِنَ كَلَامِنَا لَاتَّبَعُونَا.

خداوند رحمان بنده اي را که امر ما را زنده نگه دارد قرين رحمت خود ميگرداند.  راوي ميگويد: از آن بزرگوار پرسيدم که چگونه امر شما زنده ميشود؟  پاسخ فرمودند: با يادگيري علوم ما و تعليم اين علوم به مردم.  بدرستيکه اگر مردم به محاسن گفته هاي ما علم پيدا کنند محققا از ما پيروي ميکنند.  

Allāh showers mercy upon an obedient that has revived our cause.  The Imām was asked how could one revive your cause?  He replied: By learning about our knowledge, and making it known to people.  People shall indeed follow us if they know about the virtue of our words.

Al-Imām al-Riḍā , Book No. 25, v. 1, p. 180.

19-52 Means of Shedding Sins Off

إِنَّ حُبَّنَا أَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ لَيَحُطُّ الذُّنُوبَ عَنِ الْعِبَادِ كَمَا تَحُطُّ الرِّيحُ الشَّدِيدَةُ الْوَرَقَ عَنِ الشَّجَرِ.

 

همانا که محبت ما اهل بیت مطمئنا گناه ها را از بندگان [خدا] میریزد همانطور که باد شدید برگ را  از درخت میریزد.

Verily, the love of us, Ahl al- Bayt, sheds sins off an individual, just as the strong wind sheds the leaf off the tree.

19-53 Prudent Study of the Aḥādith

بِالدِّرَايَاتِ لِلرِّوَايَاتِ يَعْلُو الْمُؤْمِنُ إِلَى أَقْصَى دَرَجَاتِ الْإِيمَان‏.

مؤمن با درایت در روایات به درجات عالی راه پیدا میکند.

The believer can escalate to highest degree of belief with prudent study of our Aḥādith.

19-54 the Rank of Ḥaḍrat Fāṭimah Zahrā’

إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَبَارَكَ وَ تَعَالَى لَيَغْضَبُ لِغَضَبِ فَاطِمَةَ وَ يَرْضَى لِرِضَاهَا

و بيقين خداوند تبارك و تعالى خشمگين گردد بواسطه خشم فاطمه، و خوشنود گردد براى خوشنودى فاطمه، صلوات اللَّه عليها.

Verily, Allāh, the exalted, shall be displeased by Faṭimah’s displeasure, and shall be pleased with her pleasure, peace and blessing be upon her.

 

This important tradition should not be misunderstood.  It is not meant to bring down the Unique Grandeur of Allāh .  On the contrary, it is meant to illustrate the purity of arat Fāṭimah ▨.  The more purified one gets, her pleasures and displeasures conform to the Pleasures and Displeasures of Allāh ◣.   This tradition demonstrates the high rank of the Wilāyah ◇, in particular, the rank of arat Fāṭimah Zahrā ▨.

19-55 the City of Knowledge and Its Gate

أَنَا مَدِينَةُ الْعِلْمِ وَ عَلِيٌّ بَابُهَا وَ هَلْ تُدْخَلُ الْمَدِينَةُ إِلَّا مِنْ بَابِهَا.

من شهر علمم و علی دروازه آن است و آيا توان وارد شهر شد جز از دروازه اش؟...

I am the “City of Knowledge” and ʿAlī   is its gate.  Can you enter the city except through its gate?[xxi]

19-56 the City of Wisdom and Its Gate

أنَا مَدِينَةُ ٱلحِكمَةِ وَ عَليٌّ بَابُهَا.

من شهر حکمتم و على دروازه آن است.

I am the “City of Wisdom” and ʿAlī is its gate.

Prophet Muḥammad , Book No. 53, p. 16.

19-57 Friendship Criterion of Prophet Muammad

إِنَّ وَلِيَّ مُحَمَّدٍ مَنْ أَطَاعَ اللَّهَ وَ إِنْ بَعُدَتْ لُحْمَتُهُ وَ إِنَّ عَدُوَّ مُحَمَّدٍ مَنْ عَصَى اللَّهَ وَ إِنْ قَرُبَتْ قَرَابَتُهُ.

دوست محمّد صلّى اللّه عليه و آله و سلّم کسى است که خدا را اطاعت کند هر چند پيوند خويشاوندى او دور باشد، و دشمن محمّد صلّى اللّه عليه و آله و سلّم کسى است که خدا را نافرمانى کند، هر چند خويشاوند نزديک او باشد.

Verily, he who follows Allāh ‘s Command is Muḥammad’s  ally ◢ even though he is far from his kinship, and he who disobeys the Command of Allāh is Muḥammad’s enemy ◢ even though he is his close relative.

19-58 Die as a Shahīd in Your Bed

مَنْ مَاتَ مِنْكُمْ عَلَى فِرَاشِهِ وَ هُوَ عَلَى مَعْرِفَةِ حَقِّ رَبِّهِ وَ حَقِّ رَسُولِهِ وَ أَهْلِ بَيْتِهِ مَاتَ شَهِيداً.  وَ وَقَعَ أَجْرُهُ عَلَى اللَّهِ وَ اسْتَوْجَبَ ثَوَابَ مَا نَوَى مِنْ صَالِحِ عَمَلِهِ.

هر كس از شما كه در بستر خويش با شناخت خدا و پيامبر صلّى اللّه عليه و آله و سلّم و اهل بيت پيامبر عليه السّلام بميرد، شهيد از دنيا رفته.  و پاداش او بر خداست، و ثواب اعمال نيكويى كه قصد انجام آن را داشته خواهد برد.

Anyone, among you, who acknowledges the “Right” of his Lord ◣ and the right of His Prophet, and the Ahl al-Bayt ◇, he dies as a shahid, [even] if he dies in his bed.  And his recompense is with Allāh ◣, receiving the rewards of good acts he had intended to do.

19-59 Ahl Al-Bayt and Celestial Bodies

مَثَلُ أَهْلِ بَيْتِي كَمَثَلِ النُّجُومِ فَإِنَّهَا أَمَانٌ لِأَهْلِ السَّمَاءِ وَ أَهْلُ بَيْتِي أَمَانٌ لِأَهْلِ الْأَرْضِ فَإِذَا خَلَتِ السَّمَاءُ مِنَ النُّجُومِ أَتَى أَهْلَ السَّمَاءِ مَا يُوعَدُونَ وَ إِذَا خَلَتِ الْأَرْضُ مِنْ أَهْلِ بَيْتِي أَتَى أَهْلَ الْأَرْضِ مَا يُوعَدُونَ‏.

مَثَلِ اهل بیت من مِثلِ مَثَلِ ستارگان[xxii] است.  همانطور که اجرام آسمانی مایه سکون و آرامش اهل آسمانند، اهل بیت من [نیز] مایه آرامش و حمایت اهل زمین اند.  پس همانطور که وقتی آسمان از ستارگان خالی شود، آنچه برای آسمانیان وعده داده شده است بوقوع خواهد پیوست، هروقت زمین از اهل بیت من خالی شود، برای زمینیان آنچه وعده داده شده است بوقوع خواهد پیوست.

   Parable of my Ahl al-Bayt is similar to the celestial bodies.  The latter are the causes of stability and solidity for the residents of the Heavens.  My Ahl al-Bayt are the cause of peace and tranquility for the residents of the Earth.  Whenever the Heavens are devoid of celestial bodies, then occurs what is promised to people of the Heavens.  And whenever the Earth is devoid of my Ahl al-Bayt, then occurs what is promised to people of the Earth.

19-60 We Better Know the Imām of Our Era Well

رُوِيَ عَنْ آبَائِهِ أَنَّ الْأَرْضَ لَا تَخْلُو مِنْ حُجَّةٍ لِلَّهِ عَلَى [جَمِیعِ] خَلْقِهِ إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ وَ أَنَّ مَنْ مَاتَ وَ لَمْ يَعْرِفْ إِمَامَ زَمَانِهِ مَاتَ مِيتَةً جَاهِلِيَّةً فَقَالَ إِنَّ هَذَا حَقٌّ كَمَا أَنَّ النَّهَارَ حَقٌّ فَقِيلَ لَهُ يَا ابْنَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ فَمَنِ الْحُجَّةُ وَ الْإِمَامُ بَعْدَكَ فَقَالَ ابْنِي مُحَمَّدٌ هُوَ الْإِمَامُ وَ الْحُجَّةُ بَعْدِي مَنْ مَاتَ وَ لَمْ يَعْرِفْهُ مَاتَ مِيتَةً جَاهِلِيَّةً أَمَا إِنَّ لَهُ غَيْبَةً يَحَارُ فِيهَا الْجَاهِلُونَ وَ يَهْلِكُ فِيهَا الْمُبْطِلُونَ وَ يَكْذِبُ فِيهَا الْوَقَّاتُون‏.

از پدران خود روايت كرده است كه "محققا زمين تا روز قيامت از حجت خدا بر  جمیع خلقش خالى نخواهد ماند و محققا هر كس بميرد و حال آنکه امام زمان خود را نشناخته باشد به مرگ جاهليت مرده است."  سپس فرمود "محققا اين حقّ است چنانکه روز حقّ است."  به او عرض شد يا ابن رسول اللَّه حجت و امام بعد از تو كيست؟  فرمود "پسرم محمد، او است امام و حجت بعد از من هر كس بميرد و او را نشناسد بمردن جاهليت مرده است.  آگاه باشيد كه براى او غيبتى است كه نادانان در آن سر گردان شوند، مبطلان در آن هلاك گردند، و وقت‏گذاران در آن دروغ گويند."

[Al-Imām  Ḥasan al-ʿAskari] has narrated from his ancestors ◇ saying “Verily the Earth shall never be devoid of Ḥujjat of Allāh ◣ in respect to all created beings [all the way] to the Day of Resurrection; and that truly whoever dies without the cognition of the Imām of his time, shall die a Jahiliyyah death.”   Then he added “this is, indeed, as right as the day is verily right.”  He was asked “Who is the Ḥujjat and Imām after you?”  He then said “My son, Muḥammad [al-Ḥujjat ibn al-Ḥasan] who is the Imām and the Ḥujjat after me.   Whoever dies without his cognition shall die a Jahiliyyah death.   Behold that he will definitely not be seen by all (will be in occultation), during which the ignorant are perplexed, the invalidators are astray, and the forecasters [of the manifestation date] tell lies.”

19-61  The parable of Noah’s Ark

مَثَلُ أَهْلِ بَيْتِي فِي أُمَّتِي مَثَلُ سَفِينَةِ نُوحٍ مَنْ رَكِبَهَا نَجَا وَ مَنْ رَغِبَ عَنْهَا هَلَك‏.

 

مَثَلِ اهل بیت من در امتم مَثَلِ كشتى نوح است هر كس سوار آن شود نجات يابد و هر كه از آن رو گرداند هلاك شود.

The parable of my Ahl al-Bayt in my ummah[xxiii] is that of Noah’s Ark.  Whoever is on it shall be saved, and whoever turns away from it, shall be going astray.

19-62 ʿAlī’s Identity Certificate by Prophet Muḥammad  

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ لِعَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ يَا عَلِيُّ أَنْتَ مِنِّي بِمَنْزِلَةِ هِبَةِ اللَّهِ مِنْ آدَمَ وَ بِمَنْزِلَةِ سَامٍ مِنْ نُوحٍ وَ بِمَنْزِلَةِ إِسْحَاقَ مِنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَ بِمَنْزِلَةِ هَارُونَ مِنْ مُوسَى وَ بِمَنْزِلَةِ شَمْعُونَ مِنْ عِيسَى إِلَّا أَنَّهُ لَا نَبِيَّ بَعْدِي.  يَا عَلِيُّ أَنْتَ وَصِيِّي وَ خَلِيفَتِي فَمَنْ جَحَدَ وَصِيَّتَكَ وَ خِلَافَتَكَ فَلَيْسَ مِنِّي وَ لَسْتُ مِنْهُ وَ أَنَا خَصْمُهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ.  يَا عَلِيُّ أَنْتَ أَفْضَلُ أُمَّتِي فَضْلًا وَ أَقْدَمُهُمْ سِلْماً وَ أَكْثَرُهُمْ عِلْماً وَ أَوْفَرُهُمْ حِلْماً وَ أَشْجَعُهُمْ قَلْباً وَ أَسْخَاهُمْ كَفّاً.  يَا عَلِيُّ أَنْتَ الْإِمَامُ بَعْدِي وَ الْأَمِيرُ وَ أَنْتَ الصَّاحِبُ بَعْدِي وَ الْوَزِيرُ وَ مَا لَكَ فِي أُمَّتِي مِنْ نَظِيرٍ يَا عَلِيُّ أَنْتَ قَسِيمُ الْجَنَّةِ وَ النَّارِ.  بِمَحَبَّتِكَ يُعْرَفُ الْأَبْرَارُ مِنَ الْفُجَّارِ وَ يُمَيَّزُ بَيْنَ الْأَشْرَارِ وَ الْأَخْيَارِ وَ بَيْنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَ الْكُفَّار.

رسول خدا به على بن ابى طالب فرمود:  اى على! تو نسبت به من همچون شیث هِبَةِ اللَّه هستى نسبت به آدم و همچون سام نسبت به نوح و همچون اسحق نسبت به ابراهيم و همچون هارون نسبت به موسى و همچون شمعون نسبت به عيسى، با این تفاوت که پس از من پيغمبرى در کار نيست.  اى على!  تو وصى و خليفه منى؛ هر كه وصايت و خلافت تو را منكر شود، از من نيست و من از او نيستم؛ و من روز قيامت دشمن او خواهم بود.  اى على!  تو برترین افراد امت من در فضیلت ، و پیشگام ترین آنها در تسلیم، و پرمحتوا ترین آنها در دانش، و وافرترین آنها در بردباری، و برترین آنها در شجاعت، و سخاوتمندترین آنها در عطا و بخشش هستی.  اى على تو پس از من امام و اميرى؛ تو پس از من صاحب [الامر]، و وزيرى. تو در امتم مانندی ندارى.  اى على تو قسمت كننده بهشت و آتش [دوزخى]. با دوستى توست که نیکوکاران را از بدکاران باز می شناسند،  و بین بَدان و نيكان، و نیز بین مؤمنان و کافران تمیز می دهند.

Prophet Muḥammad told ʿAlī ibn Abi Ṭālib :  O ʿAlī!  Your status to me is the status of Hibatullah[xxiv] to Ādam (Adam), and that of Sām (Shem) to Nūḥ (Noah), and that of Isḥāq  (Isaac) to Ibrāhim  (Abraham), and that of Hārūn  (Aaron) to Musā (Moses), and that of Shamʿūn  (Simon) to ʿIsā  (Jesus) ◇, except that there is no Nabīy (prophet) after me.  O ʿAlī!  You are my vicegerent and my successor; so whoever denies your vicegerency or your successorship, is not from me, and I am not from him; and I am his enemy on the Day of Judgment. 

O ʿAlī!  You are the preeminent person among my ummah[xxv] in virtue, and the foremost one among them in submission [to the Will of Allāh], and the richest one among them in knowledge, and the most unsurpassed one among them in forbearance, and the best one among them in courage [i.e. the most lion-hearted one], and the unsurpassed one among them in generosity.  O ʿAlī!  You will be the ʼImām (divinely appointed leader) after me, and the Commander [of the faithfulامیرالمؤمنین ], and you will be the companion after me, and the vizier (minister).  And, there is no peer for you in my ummah. 

O ʿAlī! You are the one who divides the paradise and the fire [lots][xxvi].  By love for you the righteous are recognized from the wicked sinners, and the vicious are distinguished from the virtuous, and the Mu’minūn (the faithful) from the Kāfirūn (the faithless).

 

The history has well proved the veracity of this statement.  Characteristics of the lovers of Ḥaḍrat ʿAlī ▧ are vividly distinguishable from those of his enemies.  In other words faithfulness and devotion to Ḥaḍrat ʿAlī ▧ has proved to be a criterion to distinguish the virtuous from the wicked, in personal and community levels.

19-63 Who Can Recognize the Truth of Allāh’s Recognition?

لا يعرف اللّه حقّ معرفته إلّا أنا و عليّ.  و لا يعرفني حقّ معرفتي إلّا اللّه و عليّ.  و لا يعرف عليّا حقّ معرفته إلّا اللّه و أنا.

جز من و على، کسی خدا را آن چنان كه حق شناخت اوست نمى‏شناسد.  و جز خدا و على کسی مرا آن چنان كه حق شناخت من است نمى‏شناسد.  و جز خدا و من کسی على را آن چنان كه حق شناخت اوست نمى‏شناسد.

No one recognizes the truth of Allāh’s recognition, except ʿAlī and I.  And no one recognizes the truth of my recognition except Allāh and ʿAlī.  And no one recognizes the truth of ʿAlī’s recognition except Allāh and I.

19-64 Our Real Fathers Are Muḥammad and ʿAlī

All the forteen infallibles have corroborated this view, without any exception.  But we suffice to translate the first five traditions only, in order to avoid repetition.  Whoever is interested to have the complete set of traditions can find them in the reference given below. 

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ : أَفْضَلُ وَالِدَيْكُمْ وَ أَحَقُّهُمَا لِشُكْرِكُمْ مُحَمَّدٌ وَ عَلِيٌ‏.

پيامبر اكرم فرمود بهترين والدین شما، و سزاوارترين آنها به سپاسگزارى، محمّد و على هستند.

Prophet Muḥammad ◢ said: Your best parents, most deserving your appreciation, are Muḥammad and ʿAlī ▩.

 

وَ قَالَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص يَقُولُ أَنَا وَ عَلِيٌّ أَبَوَا هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ وَ لَحَقُّنَا عَلَيْهِمْ أَعْظَمُ مِنْ حَقِّ أَبَوَيْ وِلَادَتِهِمْ فَإِنَّهَا نُنْقِذُهُمْ إِنْ أَطَاعُونَا مِنَ النَّارِ إِلَى دَارِ الْقَرَارِ وَ نَلْحَقُهُمْ مِنَ الْعُبُودِيَّةِ بِخِيَارِ الْأَحْرَارِ.

علي بن ابى طالب فرمود: از پيامبر اكرم شنيدم ميفرمود من و على دو پدر اين امت هستيم و یقینا حق ما بر مردم بيشتر از حق پدر و مادر نژادى است زيرا، در صورت اطاعت، ما آنها را از جهنم به دار قرار (بهشت برين) نجات داده، و آنها را از بندگى رهائى ‏بخشيده، به بهترین آزادگان ملحق میکنیم.

ʿAlī ibn ’Abi Ṭālib said: I heard the most honourable prophet saying “ʿAlī and I are the two fathers of this ummah[xxvii].  Verily, our rights upon them are greater than the rights of their physical fathers.  This is because we save them from the Fire to the serene abode (Paradise), if they obey us.  And we take them out of slavery to the choice freedom.”

 

وَ قَالَتْ فَاطِمَةُ : أَبَوَا هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ مُحَمَّدٌ وَ عَلِيٌّ يُقِيمَانِ أَوَدَهُمْ وَ يُنْقِذَانِهِمْ مِنَ الْعَذَابِ الدَّائِمِ إِنْ أَطَاعُوهُمَا وَ يُبِيحَانِهِمُ النَّعِيمَ الدَّائِمَ إِنْ وَافَقُوهُمَا

حضرت فاطمه فرمود: دو پدر اين امت محمّد و علي هستند.  آن دو آنها را از انحراف باز ميدارند و از عذاب دائم رهائى مى‏بخشند، اگر مطيع آن دو باشند.  و به نعمت جاويد ميرسانند، اگر خود را به آن دو وفق دهند.

Ḥaḍrat Fāṭimah ▨ said:  The two fathers of this ummah are Muḥammad ◢ and Alī ▧.  They ▩ straighten the deviations [of the ummah], and save them from the permanent suffering, if they obey.  And they ▩ lead them to the permanent blessing, if they adapt themselves to them ▩ [i.e. to the Straight Path].

 

قَالَ الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ ▧: مُحَمَّدٌ وَ عَلِيٌّ أَبَوَا هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ.  فَطُوبَى لِمَنْ كَانَ بِحَقِّهِمَا عَارِفاً وَ لَهُمَا فِي كُلِّ أَحْوَالِهِ مُطِيعاً يَجْعَلُهُ اللَّهُ مِنْ أَفْضَلِ سُكَّانِ جِنَانِهِ وَ يُسْعِدُهُ بِكَرَامَاتِهِ وَ رِضْوَانِهِ‏.

حضرت امام حسن فرمود: دو پدر اين امت محمّد و علي هستند خوشا بحال كسى كه عارف بحق آنها باشد و در تمام احوال از ايشان اطاعت كند.  خداوند متعال او را از بهترين ساكنين بهشت قرار داده و او با کرامات و الطاف خود سعادتمند میکند.

Ḥaḍrat ’Imām Ḥasan ▧ said: Muḥammad ◢ and ʿAlī ▧ are the two fathers of this ummah.  So, lucky is he who is cognizant of their rights, and is in all conditions obedient.  Allāh ◣ shall settle him down among the best residents of the Garden (Paradise), and makes him prosperous out of His Generosities and Satisfaction ◣.   

قَالَ الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ ▧: مَنْ عَرَفَ حَقَّ أَبَوَيْهِ الْأَفْضَلَيْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَ عَلِيٍّ وَ أَطَاعَهُمَا حَقَّ طَاعَتِهِ قِيلَ لَهُ تَبَحْبَحْ فِي أَيِّ الْجِنَانِ شِئْتَ.

حضرت امام حسين فرمود: هر كس حق دو پدر شايسته ‏تر خود محمّد و على را بشناسد و بواقع از ايشان اطاعت كند باو گفته میشود "هر كجاى بهشت كه مايلى ساكن شو."

Ḥaḍrat ʼImām Ḥusayn ▧ said: Whoever recognizes the rights of his better fathers, Muḥammad ◢ and ʿAlī ▧, and obey them the right obedience, he will be told “reside anywhere you wish in the Paradise.”

...السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ يَا أَهْلَ بَيْتِ النُّبُوَّةِ وَ مَوْضِعَ الرِّسَالَةِ وَمُخْتَلَفَ الْمَلاَئِكَةِ وَمَهْبِطَ الْوَحْيِ وَمَعْدِنَ الرَّحْمَةِ وَخُزَّانَ الْعِلْمِ وَمُنْتَهَى الْحِلْمِ وَأُصُولَ الْكَرَمِ وَقَادَةَ الْأُمَمِ وَأَوْلِيَاءَ النِّعَمِ ‏وَعَنَاصِرَ الْأَبْرَارِ وَدَعَائِمَ الْأَخْيَارِ وَسَاسَةَ الْعِبَادِ وَأَرْكَانَ الْبِلاَدِ وَأَبْوَابَ الْإِيمَانِ ‏وَأُمَنَاءَ الرَّحْمَنِ وَسُلاَلَةَ النَّبِيِّينَ وَصَفْوَةَ الْمُرْسَلِينَ وَعِتْرَةَ خِيَرَةِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ...

...سلام و رحمت خداوند و برکات او بر شما اى خاندان نبوت، و جايگاه رسالت و مركز رفت و آمد فرشتگان و جاى فرود آمدن وحى (الهى) و معدن‏ رحمت [حضرت حقّ] و گنجينه‏داران دانش و سرحد نهائى بردبارى و سرچشمه بزرگوارى و پيشوايان ملتها و در اختيار دارندگان نعمتها و اولاد (نسل) نيكان و حامی خوبان و زمامداران بندگان‏ و ارکان شهرها و دروازه هاى ايمان و امناى خداوند رحمان و نواده پيمبران‏ و زبده (اولاد) رسولان و عترت منتخب پروردگار جهانيان...

The Salām, mercy and blessings of Allāh is upon you O!  Ahl al-Bayt of the Prophet, addressees of the Divine mission,  passage centre of the angels, landing targets of the Divine revelation, primary sources of the mercy [of Allāh ], treasures of the [Divine] Knowledge, implementers of the utmost forbearance, fountainheads of the generous greatness, directors of the followers, authorisers of the [Divine] bounties, offspring of the innocents, supporters of the excellent [people], leaders of the obedient (s), pillars of the communities, gateways of the true faith (Imān), trustees of the All-beneficent Allāh , [distinguished] descendants of the Prophets, elite [lineages] of the Messengers, Itrah (Household) of the best choice of the Lord of the worlds
